Yet Another Study Confirming Vitamin D Benefits to Fight COVID
Take it and get your blood tested for it
Some time ago I published one of my best and important articles on the benefits of vitamin D. It is worth reading for the first or second time.
Here are the conclusions from that article:
“Seeing vitamin D as crucial to surviving COVID is supported by solid medical research. There is good data to support a desired level of 50 ng/mL. Whether a person has this level requires a blood test for the vitamin, not something that most physicians normally call for when ordering blood tests for other reasons.
As the US approaches 800,000 COVID related deaths [now much higher] it is reasonable to believe that perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved if the government had strongly supported vitamin D blood testing and supplementation if needed. But in the absence of such a COVID policy, people have good reasons to use D supplements if they are not routinely exposed to sunlight without using sunscreen products.
Many physicians have issued protocols for preventing and treating COVID that include vitamin D supplements. For example, the esteemed Dr. Zelenko uses the following: 5,000 IU 1 time a day for 7 days for low risk patients, and for high risk patients: 10,000 IU once a day for 7 days or 50,000 IU once a day for 1-2 days.
However, continuing its stupidity, NIH maintains that “There is insufficient evidence to recommend either for or against the use of vitamin D for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19.” This too was said: “Vitamin D deficiency (defined as vitamin D ≤20 ng/mL) is common in the United States, particularly among persons of Hispanic ethnicity and Black race. These groups are also overrepresented among cases of COVID-19 in the United States. Vitamin D deficiency is also more common in older patients and patients with obesity and hypertension; these factors have been associated with worse outcomes in patients with COVID-19.” Sounds smart to fight deficiency for avoiding COVID health impacts.
Sadly, we cannot count on the public health establishment to take a science-based, aggressive policy on using vitamin D supplements as an alternative to COVID vaccines or expensive medicines. Its up to individuals to protect their own lives by being well informed and proactive.”
New Israeli research
A new research article by Israeli scientists has once again confirmed the benefits of vitamin D in the fight against COVID. They were able to look at pre-disease levels and correlate them to severity of COVID infection. Below are the key graphs for three age groups.
They support the German desired level of at least 50 ng/mL in blood. Indeed, many people should be aiming at a higher level, especially younger people and older ones.
On a personal note, I recently had my vitamin D blood level tested; it was just over 60, after using a regular daily dose of 8,000 units. I am now increasing that somewhat.
Conclusions from new study
Among hospitalized COVID-19 patients, pre-infection deficiency of vitamin D was associated with increased disease severity and mortality.
Our study contributes to a continually evolving body of evidence that suggests a patient’s history of vitamin D deficiency is a predictive risk factor associated with poorer COVID-19 clinical disease course and mortality. The use of historical results obtained before the COVID-19 pandemic as part of a public health survey enabled us to suggest vitamin D deficiency contributes to the causal pathway of COVID-19 mortality risk and disease severity.
US public health system failure
Of all the things that could have been done to save countless lives, a cheap and smart action would have been to widely and freely distribute vitamin D pills to the population. Just another Fauci failure.
For more information in vitamin D and the immune system, including Quraisi et al. 2014 (50 ng/mL 25-hydroxyvitamin D needed for full innate and adaptive responses) and Chauss et al. 2021 (Th1 regulatory lymphocytes from the lungs of hospitalised COVID-19 patients were stuck in their pro-inflammatory startup program, and never transition to their anti-inflammatory shutdown program, in large part or entirely due to having insufficient 25-hydroxyvitamin D for each cell to run its autocrine - inside the cell - signaling system), see: "What every MD, immunologist, virologist and epidemiologist should know about vitamin D and the immune system": https://vitamindstopscovid.info/05-mds/ .

One would think that most doctors would have figured out long ago that the seasonality of influenza and COVID-19 is primarily due to 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels: https://nutritionmatters.substack.com/p/covid-19-seasonality-is-primarily . Most of them are more interested in vaccines and other pseudo-sophisticated treatments than in nutrition.
That last paragraph is absolutely correct. Of course it is a simple matter for almost any individual to buy and take vitamin D pills, but since so many fail to do so some promotion and giveaways would be in order. It is pretty amazing that no U S local government, nor any charitable organization, (at least to my knowledge) has undertaken this themselves.
